Global Monitor Platform(TM)
PEM's GMP Provides Real-Time Data for Carbon In the Field
First GMP Commercial Sales Expected in Q2, 2012
PEM's GMP is a muliti-isotopic analyzer capable of measureing both 13C and 14C values in the free atmosphere without preconcentration. The basic design and operational features are drawn from the extensive work of Charles Freed and colleagues, at MIT's Lincoln Lab, spanning over 30 years. The work of Freed and others utilized sealed-off CO2 lasers with gas compositions for nine isotopic species of CO2. Reporting in Freed et al., 1980, the absolute lasing transitions in seven CO2 isotopic species were determined forming the basis for high precision spectroscopy of 14CO2 among other species of interest.
PEM is dedicated to reducing uncertainties of carbon budgets at local and global scales using innovative laser-based technology. The PEM Global Monitor Platform (GMP)™, offering automated, high precision measurements of the rare carbon isotope ratios of CO2, is now in the early stage of commercialization. PEM is pioneering "Isotopic Verification™" a tool for carbon budgets to support carbon pricing, carbon trading and related capital markets with improved accountability, fraud protection and global standardization.
PEM's GMP is shown in the illustration below consisting of component (1) housing three lasers (12C, 13C, 14C) and optical elements required effectively excite specific 14CO2 lines of interest. Components 2 and 3 represent power supplies for the lasers and other electronics. Component 4 shows a rechargeable battery pack with a 6 hour lifetime. The current version of the GMP is undergoing improvement and upgrade bsased on year 1 field work results.
The PEM GMP is being manufactured in conjunction with the a private manufacturing entity.
